More and more people in the UK are taking up canoeing each year. According to British Canoeing, there are now over 300,000 households in the UK who have taken up canoeing. People of all ages and abilities are canoeing as a leisure activity.
The River Wensum is one of the most beautiful rivers in Norwich. Winding through the stunning Norfolk countryside, the river starts near Fakenham and meanders through the county, running right through the centre of Norwich, before joining with the River Yare.
The Ringland Swan is nestled in the lovely Norfolk Wensum Valley, close to the Wensum and is a prime stop for canoeists, walkers and fisherman alike.
While the popularity of canoeing is increasing, many people new to the sport don’t realise you need a licence to canoe on most waterways in the UK. Donna Littleboy, owner of The Ringland Swan, is a license administrator able to provide enthusiastic canoeists with a licence to launch their canoe from Ringland and paddle on the Wensum.
The permits can be obtained by popping into the pub and completing the form or Donna can send you a form in the post. Alternatively, visit the Ringland Parish Council website and download a form. The licence permit gives you 12 months’ access to the river for just £5.
So, if you plan to paddle along the Wensum don’t forget to call into the Ringland Swan. Being by the river, allows adventurers to not only enjoy hearty food from our modern pub but to also enjoy the views we have to offer. Whether you want to go for a leisurely canoe down the river with the family or if there’s a large group of you, The Ringland Swan is the perfect place to stop off for a spot to eat or for refreshments.
Whether you’re a beginner thinking about taking up canoeing, or part of a canoeing club, the Wensum is a wonderful place to come and explore the best Norfolk has to offer.

Popped in here for lunch the other day, hadn't been in for a while but was not disappointed. Friendly staff, warm fire and a good lunch menu in the public bar. Excellent locally sourced food and great home cooked chips - magic.Hugh M
We both had burger and chips and if 'Carlsberg' made burgers, so to speak, they real we're the best burgers we have ever had!!! (and the chips) The coffee was delicious as was the biscuit served with it and even the bill came with a little mint to top it of, perfectly.Angela D
Have recently got a puppy so rang to check we could take him. We had to eat in the bar, which was lovely, lots of space, log burner. Staff and regulars friendly. And the bar menu food excellent and good value. Lots of parking and a good area for going for a walk along the Wensum valley.Takum111 (on Tripadvisor)
